Two

By Jim Cartwright

Set in a local northern pub - Two tells the story of the The Landlord and Landlady, their cheery greeting and friendly banter barely disguises their contempt for each other. They met outside the pub when they were kids and now they own the place. During the course of the evening assorted customers pass through, and we get a small snapshot into each of their lives.

From the award-winning writer of Little Voice and Road - Jim Cartwright's third play Two, was first performed in 1989 at the Octagon Theatre in Bolton, then transferred to the Young Vic Theatre. It won the Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for Best New Play.

Meet Helen, before Troy, in this feminist retelling of the Ancient Greek epic. Witness her divine beginnings (yes, she did hatch from an egg!), her youth as a Spartan warrior, her fateful decision to leave her husband, and finally the decade of brutal war and destruction that follows.

That Witch Helen blends myth, movement, and storytelling to give Helen of Troy, one of history’s most hated women, a chance to tell her own story.

    Karaoke at the S.U

What’s worse than bumping into a terrible one-night stand? Meeting in the abortion clinic is probably up there.

In this sharp dramatic-comedy, Lorna and Benji keep crossing paths as they try to navigate university culture, relationships and what it means to “be an adult”. Equal parts silly and melancholy, they try to answer the age old question: how much of your student loan could you pay off being on OnlyFans?

Not quite a rom-com, not quite a cabaret, ‘Karaoke at the SU’ fuses a story spanning decades with musical numbers and puppetry to create something that speaks to everyone’s inner child.

Be prepared for tears, bad dancing and too much WKD.

“Because whatever has happened to humanity, whatever is currently happening, it is happening to us all. No matter how far off the screams of pain and terror, we live in one world.” (Alice Walker) //
Premiere of an experimental play that takes for its structure the four parts of the Geneva Convention – Wounded & Sick / Maritime / Prisoners of War / Civilians – to tell an ancient/contemporary story of the random depravity of war and its existential / psychological impacts for those who are involved and those who are not.

The work grows out of an international collaboration between local writer/theatremaker Mark C. Hewitt and renowned Norwegian percussionist/composer Thomas Strønen. Stylised and kaleidoscopic, the fractured evolving narrative is performed by 4 actresses from 4 different countries, variously delivering lines in English, French, Polish and a smattering of other languages.

    • “BRILLIANT. Thought-provoking, raw, provocative, multi-dimensional; use of music, space, silence ... the brave lack of ‘closure’ or conventional narrative.” (Audience feedback)

    • “Loved the performance, the set and how it changed, likewise the music ...” (Audience feedback)

    • “A really powerful provocative piece.” (Audience feedback)

Written & directed by Mark C. Hewitt. Performed by Marta Carvalho, Leann O'Kasi, Melissa Sirol, Maria Ziołkowska. Music by Thomas Strønen, performed and recorded by Time Is A Blind Guide. Technical design by Paul Phillips. Videography by Matt Parsons. Movement consultant: Miriam King.
