The Merchant of Venice

The Merchant of Venice

by William Shakespeare
Directed by Alex Pearson

'If it will feed nothing else, it will feed my revenge.'

Set against the backdrop of modern-day working shipping docks, Antonia, a wealthy Merchant is desperately in need of funds. Her friend, Bassanio, needs a rich wife to clear his debts. Portia, a wealthy heiress, reduced to a prize for which men must gamble, seems to be the perfect solution.

Beneath the charmed surface, all are at risk, and everyone needs a win. As for Shylock, the despised and alienated moneylender? Is he the answer to Antonia’s prayers or will Shylock seek revenge against the community that has never accepted him?

And like Shakespeare we ask:
“How in an avaricious society can truth and justice be achieved if there is no love?”

The most recent production of The Merchant of Venice was at the Drayton Arms Theatre ran between 1 -19th October 2019 and was directed by Alex Pearson.

This dynamic, visceral modern-day adaptation, played to sold out audiences.  We focus on clear storytelling in a modern London setting, we take a fresh look at The Merchant of Venice, and its famous Jewish antagonist Shylock. By embracing the characters’ darker and lighter extremes, they emerge as greedy and morally grey, but real. We are concerned by the rise in anti-Semitic and other racist behaviour and we believe in the power of theatre to explore divisive social issues.

    Circle Mirror Transformation

    by Annie Baker

London Bridge stabbings 2017. 8 dead, 48 injured, millions around the world affected.

At these challenging times of war and fear, how do we choose to respond? A small group of people from different cultures, nationalities and gender identities, find their way through life in London and join a weekly community theatre class. Their lives intersect, their stories get vocalised, their secrets revealed, creating a microcosmos, allowing them to ignore the reality of atrocities in their city.

A piece of meta-theatre where a group of actors take on the roles of participants in a theatre class to be ‘transformed’. What is our role as audience members, sitting outside of ‘their new reality’ looking at them ?

A play about the power of community theatre on people’s lives.

Savage in Limbo by JP Shanley

A stunning early piece of theatre with a touch of the surreal from Academy, Tony and Pulitzer Award winner JP Shanley.

Set in a bar in his hometown of the Bronx, it is a deeply personal piece – visceral, funny and intelligent; a searing examination of what it means to be stuck in 'Limbo' and an exhortation to fight for the courage to break free.

Using different aspects of himself, these discordant voices form the characters of the play, smelted with the people of his hometown of the Bronx. The “meatgrinder” as he calls it. The play is set in ‘Scales’ bar in the Bronx, 1984. It is period of extreme poverty, hopelessness, governmental distrust, racism, crime, and violence but also great passion, creativity, and community. The Bronx has burned for over a decade as those who could fled to safer boroughs as the inhumane process of ‘Redlining’ helped create exactly that for which it had been intended.

Murk, the taciturn bar owner, stands silent vigil over the drunken, slumbering form of April White, a woman once committed to the cloth, as Denise Savage storms into the bar looking for a good night out to find...nothing. Her quest to find change begins as Linda, an old school acquaintance, enters sobbing about her man Tony leaving her to be with, in his own words, 'Ugly girls'. Tony soon follows her in and with Savage as the catalyst, the characters collide like balls on a pool table desperately seeking a way out of their own personal Limbo's.

This is a play which speaks to almost all of us...a burning need to pursue our dreams and the search for meaning, identity, purpose. It serves as an examination of the chains that bind us but also the threads which connect us all...how we are all united by suffering and deep yearning: by the commonality of the human experience. Beyond this Shanley lays down the gauntlet to us as an audience…what are we going to do?

In Shanley’s own words: “Well, what are you gonna do? The place is closing up soon. What are you gonna do with your life? Are you gonna have the guts to do what's in your heart to do? Or are you gonna narcotize yourself and wait for death? What are you gonna do? Last call."
