An Evening of American Theatre: Paul Robeson & Suzi of the Dress

    Suzi of the Dress

    By Albert Welling

Featuring Nicole Hall and Christoph Cording

    A Pre-Freudian attitude in  a post-Freudian world

Counsellor Suzie does not expect her next client to be the Prince of Denmark, but Hamlet needs serious advice.  His life is a mess.  Suzie’s post-Freudian approach to this Elizabethan enigma proves a challenge for both counsellor and counselee, producing fireworks neither expect.  He’s an arrogant hothead, she’s a cool professional and both are certain they can get inside the other’s head.  Smart and insightful, this new play from UK playwright Albert Welling is full of surprises.

    Paul Robeson

    By Phillip Hayes Dean

Featuring Robert McNichols as Paul Robeson

Scholar Athlete, Actor, Singer, Activist, Traitor, Hero

A powerful chronicle of the life and music of Paul Robeson, taking us from his childhood in New Jersey to his adult life around the world.  An All-American athlete and a lawyer with Columbia Law School credentials, Robeson comes face to face with racism in America.  Realizing he could not practice as a lawyer, Robeson turns to singing, which leads to acting and his acting leads him around the world.  After spending time in Europe, he returns to the United States, but is accused of being a Communist, an agitator and much more. He is blacklisted and his passport is revoked. But, as the social climate finally begins to change, Robeson perseveres, achieving the glory and respect he rightly earned along the way.

    The Merchant of Venice

    2:00 pm-3:40 pm
    01/03/2024

    The Merchant of Venice

    by William Shakespeare
    Directed by Alex Pearson

‘If it will feed nothing else, it will feed my revenge.’

Set against the backdrop of modern-day working shipping docks, Antonia, a wealthy Merchant is desperately in need of funds. Her friend, Bassanio, needs a rich wife to clear his debts. Portia, a wealthy heiress, reduced to a prize for which men must gamble, seems to be the perfect solution.

Beneath the charmed surface, all are at risk, and everyone needs a win. As for Shylock, the despised and alienated moneylender? Is he the answer to Antonia’s prayers or will Shylock seek revenge against the community that has never accepted him?

    And like Shakespeare we ask:
“How in an avaricious society can truth and justice be achieved if there is no love?”

The most recent production of The Merchant of Venice was at the Drayton Arms Theatre ran between 1 -19th October 2019 and was directed by Alex Pearson.

This dynamic, visceral modern-day adaptation, played to sold out audiences.  We focus on clear storytelling in a modern London setting, we take a fresh look at The Merchant of Venice, and its famous Jewish antagonist Shylock. By embracing the characters’ darker and lighter extremes, they emerge as greedy and morally grey, but real. We are concerned by the rise in anti-Semitic and other racist behaviour and we believe in the power of theatre to explore divisive social issues.

The Ruffian On The Stair & Funeral Games

    2:00 pm-4:20 pm
    01/03/2024-13/08/2023

    Joe Orton Double Bill

    Ruffian On The Stair
Orton’s first play, the one-act The Ruffian on the Stair is a claustrophobic black comedy about two domesticated criminals and a menacing stranger.

It is two years since Mike persuaded Joyce to give up a rather dubious career and live with him in a small flat and an unstimulating relationship. Mike is fitfully employed, receiving furtive commissions to cause certain people significant bodily inconvenience.  Left alone in the flat with the goldfish, Joyce is visited by Wilson, who invites himself in and reveals he knows quite a lot about her current life, and aforementioned dubious employment. From Wilson’s more-than-fraternal relationship with his deceased brother and Mike’s violently-protective jealousy emerges a tense and bristling comedy of unusual morality.

The Ruffian on the Stair was broadcast on BBC Radio in 1964, and given its first stage performance in a production by the English Stage Society in 1966. This revised version was produced at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 1967.

    Funeral Games
Irreverently morbid, impeccably witty and viciously satiric, Funeral Games is a black farce of unconventional piety. Caulfield, a self-confessed member of the criminal classes, is hired as a private investigator by Pringle, who suspects his wife of having an affair. Pringle is the head of a seedy sect called ‘The Brotherhood’; he has a hot water bottle in the shape of a cross and communes intimately with female penitents. His wife, it turns out, has been doing nothing more compromising than caring for McCorquodale, an elderly defrocked priest with a body in his cellar. But the Bible demands that Pringle exacts brutal revenge upon the ‘adulteress’: not to kill her would be to risk the fury of his adoring and amorous public.

The play’s mischievously inverted piety makes a deliciously sharp and hilarious attack on religious hypocrisy. Funeral Games was first presented by Yorkshire Television in 1968.

    Paler, Still

by Oonagh Wall in collaboration with the company.

    Nothing grows in Dublin anymore.
Concrete, glass and grey. The landscape is the same everywhere,
Beyond the Pale, in the rural Irish boglands, an abandoned Hotel rots.
This would be a safe place to stagnate.
    Or so it seems.
Set in a near-future Ireland were the Western World has eaten itself into anonymity and another recession: Paler, Still is a new tragi-comedy and is anseo|anois theatre’s debut production.
Paler, Still tells a story set in Ireland, but it is not just a story for the Irish. This small country is a microcosm for something we see happening all over the Western World. The poverty gap widens, some opportunities only available to a select few, society circling back on itself again and again and our play asks, what is the cost of progress? What is lost as we charge into the future? Are some people always left behind? And, if we despair at society, can we simply opt out?

    Labyrinth

    2:30 pm-3:30 pm
    01/03/2024

    Labyrinth

    by  LLL Productions

“Today I killed a man.” These first words plunge us into a narrative that hovers ambiguously between murder and vivid fantasy as it depicts a woman on the edge, desperate to break free of the entanglements of a love affair that’s turned toxic. Has she actually killed her lover? Is this a violent reaction to coercive control? We can’t be sure.

The original Portuguese version by Moncho Rodriguez (Labirinto de Amor e Morte) was toured in Brazil and Portugal by actress Marta Carvalho. This new English version, by writer Mark C. Hewitt, captures the obsessive visceral nature of the Portuguese original and adds, perhaps, a subtle layer of dark humour.

“Labyrinth is full-on physical theatre in which Carvalho takes us on a woman’s rollercoaster journey through a myriad of emotions… It resonates on many levels, bringing to mind elements of domestic abuse such as control, coercion, and physical violence…” (Hastings Independent Press)

    “Immersive, bold, challenging…” (audience feedback)

    by Sarah Jane Dickenson

“If I hadn’t got out of my car that day, I would not, absolutely not be here strutting my rugby fit bear body, wearing f**k-right-off amazing dangly earrings on the streets of Hull.”

For Butterfly Boy – sitting alone in a Fiat 500 in the pouring rain – the reasons for joining a gay and inclusive rugby union team in a rugby league obsessed city didn’t seem that apparent. But once in the changing room a whole new world opens up.

Inspired by the true stories of International Gay Rugby players, SAFER is a hard hitting, tender and funny exploration of the toxic side of team sports and how one new team decided to tackle it head on.

The play runs for 60 minutes and there is a 15 minute Q&A after each performance.

    HóPe

Written and performed by Giullianna Martinez, HóPe follows 2 interwoven storylines: a woman facing her mother’s blood cancer diagnosis and the life of Colombian revolutionary Policarpa Salavarrieta.
1817 Nueva Granada Viceroy of Spain (now present-day Colombia)

‘La Pola’ as she was commonly known, has been living with Andrea Ricaurte de Lozano, a noblewoman whose home doubled as a center of operations in support of the revolutionary movement. She finds employment as a seamstress and works in the homes of Spanish military leaders and authorities. Undercover, she alters and mends for them while collecting valuable intelligence, revealing the names of key royalists, and recruiting Spanish royalists to join the resistance.

    Present Day.

Andy struggles to accept the reality of her mother’s multiple myeloma diagnosis and takes the reins to find her treatment. She immerses herself in learning everything she can about the disease. Afraid accepting her condition will mean she’s giving up on her, she goes on a journey of exploring the differences between true acceptance and giving up. In pursuit of her mother’s healing, she unexpectedly finds her own.

In a world where uncertainty is the only certainty, we have a choice to resist or accept. HóPe inspires us to reflect on our own meaning of freedom, and the ways in which we are bound. Whether from illness, oppression or fear, freedom can come in many forms.

HóPe is a beautiful reflection on how the ancestral spirit of those who came before us, such as La Pola, lives within us, through our protagonist and in turn through her mother.

A comedy about the passing of time, and memory, and love, and last chances

Nominated for the Outstanding Theatre Award in the 2021 Brighton Fringe, Close Quarter Productions and Theatre Reviva! return with a brand new production of After All These Years in 2023.

Relationships can be a delicate balance of hope, desire, memory, regret and much more besides, especially when two former showbiz couples think they know all there is to know about each other.

“The finest premiere I’ve seen in this Fringe.  This Chekhovian elegy for the dance of age is in a defining league of its own.  A superb play, it should be, as one director present said, in the West End.”

    Fringe Review (2021)

Other plays by Giles Cole include: The Art of Concealment – The Life of Terence Rattigan, which premiered in the Brighton Fringe of 2011, and then transferred in a new production to London’s Jermyn Street Theatre and subsequently Riverside Studios in 2012, gathering four- and five-star reviews from The Times, The Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph, The Independent and The Daily Mail.

This was followed in 2015 by The Heart of Things, a family drama which also premiered at Jermyn Street Theatre and a double bill of two short plays, When Love Grows Old, was part of the Brighton Fringe in 2017.  Giles is currently working on Alliance, a commission from Holofcener Ltd, which is planned for larger-scale production in 2023/4 and based on the three weeks Churchill spent in the White House over Christmas 1941.  He has also written seven plays for BBC Radio 4.

In tandem with Theatre Reviva!, Close Quarter Productions produced the first Brighton Fringe run of After All These Years in 2021, which later transferred to the Ventnor Festival.  This was then followed by a short tour of R.C. Sheriff’s classic, Journey’s End.  Other productions with which CQP has been involved include the revival of A.A. Milne’s The Dover Road at Jermyn Street Theatre in 2016; more recently, the UK tour of The Lavender Hill Mob starring Miles Jupp and, in New York, American Buffalo, Two Jews Talking, The Old Man and the Pool and The Ohio State Murders.

    ProtaGonism Theatre & Different Theatre

Chemistry, written by Sam Chittenden, is set in a future world in which people can’t touch. Instead of sexual intercourse, babies are conceived through IVF, overseen by robot operators known as Fosterers.

In order to maintain human involvement in the reproductive process, prospective parents are required to meet so they can approve their genetic matching and to agree to the child being raised by the Fosterers and taught from the Rulings.

In one such pairing meeting, the sophisticated Bea and first-timer Jay try to navigate the process and their responses to each other.

Have you made a New Year’s resolution to read more plays in 2023? Challenge yourself to join us in reading a new play every month this year!

In January we’re reading Slave Play by @jeremyoharris “one of the most promising playwrights of his generation” (Vogue) and the “theatre world’s vital new voice”.

The Old South lives on at the MacGregor Plantation – in the breeze, in the cotton fields… and in the crack of the whip. Nothing is as it seems, and yet everything is as it seems.

Jeremy O. Harris’s Slave Play rips apart history to shed new light on the nexus of race, gender and sexuality in twenty-first-century America. It opened at New York Theatre Workshop in November 2018, and transferred to Broadway the following year.

    The Last

From The Last Man by Mary Shelley

“I am a victim of fate – bound for nowhere, adrift and alone”

Set in a 21st century wracked by deadly plague, Mary Shelley’s 1826 novel The Last Man is poignant and hugely relevant today. Written after the death of her husband and three of her children, it expresses Mary’s own sense of loss and isolation, and features characters based on Mary herself, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron and sisters Fanny Godwin and Claire Claremont.

This one-woman adaptation explores the book’s biographical elements and Shelley’s graphic depiction of a world wracked by pandemic.

    When This Is Over

    Devised by the company
    Directed by Graeme Dalling
In association with Company Three and Nick Hern Books

When this is over is a play in which young people tell the stories of their lives.
It is about what has happened to them in the past, who they are right now, and who they want to be in the future.
It is a play about those pivotal moments that change your life forever.
As world leaders gathered for COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021, Company Three and Nick Hern Books invited youth theatres and schools everywhere to tell the stories of the young people whose futures would depend on a successful conference.
Through months of devising, workshopping, and trial and error-ing, AKT Brighton’s youth group have created something completely unique, honest, hilarious, and truly their own. We invite you to sit down and hear what these amazing young people have to say.

    Lord God

    Lord God

by Brian Mitchell and Philip Reeve

From the writers of ‘The Ministry of Biscuits’ and ‘Pugs of the Frozen North’ stage show – author Philip Reeve (Mortal Engines)
and playwright and composer Brian Mitchell (‘Those Magnificent Men’) – comes the divine new musical comedy Lord God

When the Lord God is persuaded by His retainer and chief-cook-and-bottle-washer Gabriel to take an incognito holiday in a Devonshire seaside hotel (largely to get Him out from under His angels’ feet), He looks forward to a fortnight of uninterrupted tennis, billiards, tea on the terrace and the latest Agatha Christie. But the presence of campaigning atheist Professor ‘Minty’ Tweddle and her fiance, notoriously hard-to-please theatre critic Rex Addison, upsets His plans and leads to all manner of supernatural scrapes, japes and narrow escapes and the invention of a hot new global dance craze.

Can our hero persuade Minty He really exists?
Can He solve the Problem of Evil before breakfast?
What exactly is Rex Addison up to?
Will Gabriel step in once more to save the Almighty’s bacon?

Find out the answers to these questions and all the mysteries of Creation in the new musical comedy Lord God, from best-selling author Philip Reeve and award-winning playwright and composer Brian Mitchell, whose previous collaborations include the recent sell-out stage adaptation of Pugs of the Frozen North and the acclaimed musical comedy The Ministry of Biscuits.  Building on their reputation for thought-provoking comedy, Lord God takes a timely look at morality, faith, and why sometimes it is best not to take things too seriously.

Produced by the “renowned and very popular” (London Pub Theatres) company The Foundry Group, and with a top-notch cast including Joanna Neary (Ideal), and Murray Simon (The Ministry of Biscuits), Lord God promises a night of  witty lyrics, toe-tapping tunes and thoughtful frivolity.

“The latest vintage-inspired slice of Englishness from the engagingly skewed Foundry Group….  Clever Gilbert & Sullivanesque lyrics and sparky lines… Sweet, gentle, full of heart….a huge hit with the crowd.”

    The Ruffian on the Stair

    7:00 pm-8:00 pm
    01/03/2024

    The Ruffian on the Stair

The Ruffian on the Stair is the first play Joe Orton ever wrote. Rarely performed, this production set in a sordid bedsit has been described as ‘dripping with menace’ and ‘compelling’.

Mike and Joyce are a poor London couple living in a bedsit. Mike is an ex-boxer living on the dole who makes extra cash by running people down for money, and Joyce is an ex-prostitute.

It is an unsympathetic yet comedic one-act portrayal of working class England, as played out by a couple and a mysterious young man who toys with their lives. It was based on The Boy Hairdresser, a novel by Orton and his lover Kenneth Halliwell.

    I Am Home

    7:00 pm-8:00 pm
    01/03/2024-14/05/2023

    I Am Home

Being Human is a given, being humane is a choice.

I am Home is a hard hitting verbatim piece, focusing on the perspectives of those who are living or have lived the homeless experience. From where home was, to what it has become and what it means to be homeless in 2022.
The piece fuses devised imagery and physical theatre with verbatim story- telling.

There’s a story behind every person. There’s a reason why they are the way they are. Something in the past created them and unless we address the stigma, sometimes it is impossible to fix.

    Don’t Be A Stranger

written by charlie Douglas, with help from Jay Langley

Ash moved away from Cornwall 5 years ago from their small village named Trewith, but now they’re back to mourn the life of their friend Tom during a wake in a pub that’s all to familiar. And the bartender; an old distant flame, Bry, burned out from shame.

But one thing’s missing from the speeches, the songs, the memories of their dear friend. Tom was gay. Tom was too afraid. Tom had a boyfriend. A beautiful boyfriend. Tom couldn’t handle it. And that’s why the korev is being poured.

In this new short play, Ash finds it hard to face grief in the face in a place filled with incomplete stories and memories which they can’t say. Is it easier to die and live a life of truth or stay, but never live. But one thing’s for sure, and that’s…

    Don’t be a stranger, ok?

    Rock Bottom

    By Fresh Life Theatre

Shakespeare’s best loved clown, Bottom, is reimagined in Fresh Life Theatre’s new one-man show.

Bottom has spent his life pushing the people closest to him away, so it makes sense for him to perform a socially-distanced show. Combining the masterful wit and language of the Bard with fast-paced, sensitive new-writing, Charlie Day has created a production which has something for everyone. Bottom has been left to put a play on all by himself. Watch as he battles his demons, all in an effort to…make you like him.

Mental health is a very prominent issue in the world today, especially with everything people are going through. The show looks to open a discussion about mental health, especially men’s mental health, and hopefully make some men less reluctant to speak up.

So please, give Bottom the attention he needs!

A Lady of Letters & A Bed Among the Lentils

    by Alan Bennett

Bedlamb theatre brings you two classic monologues of 20th century British writing with a production of Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads. Bennett uses a rich canvas of recognisable references and everyday life to paint a picture of two seemingly trapped women who find freedom in unconventional ways. The master of capturing our daily rituals, undermined with biting wit, these stories show how the pain of isolation can separate us from achieving our dreams and desires.

For women, says the philosopher Susan Bordo, hunger is themost insistent raving and pre-eminent source of their anger and frustration. The anger and frustration I experienced in my life was persistent and clever. It was a literal hunger for food, for sex, for pleasure, power and respect. Now I want to eat the world. Will you join me at the table?

An Introduction to Playwriting : Staged Readings

Two new playwrights, Daniel Allen and Jason Lever, present new writing developed on ACT’s Introduction to Playwriting course.

This is a rehearsed reading with professional actors bringing these new scripts to the stage for the first time.

An eclectic evening including two direct address monologues featuring a disenchanted theatre usher and Michelangelo’s elderly assistant, Domenico. There are also two play extracts which transport us to two very different worlds – that of Indian soldiers recuperating at the Royal Pavilion during the First World War and of Lola Montez, an Irish dancer and actress who became famous as a Spanish dancer, courtesan, and mistress of King Ludwig I of Bavaria.

Coronavirus – A Great British Farce

    7:30 pm-10:00 pm
    01/03/2024

Joe went a little bit mad during lockdown – just like you did – and it’s hilariously cathartic to watch. This smash-hit Camden Fringe show is inspired by the writer’s ridiculous lockdown diaries – and it’s the best way to laugh away the trauma of the past 18 months. Joe’s stuck in a tiny flat trying to make sense of the pandemic. One day, whilst watching a government briefing on TV, he decides to answer back. This sets off a surreal conversation with… Boris? Or maybe it’s his friend on Facebook? Or… maybe it’s his fridge. All Joe knows is, he definitely doesn’t know.

Brought to you by writer-director team Mark Daniels and Edwina Strobl, this Offie-nominated dark satirical comedy offers a unique take on the British response to the pandemic. The play’s two actors (rising stars Kathryn Haywood and Edward Bartram) take you on a high-energy farcical journey from panic buying to Jackie Weaver via Matt Hancock, with an unhealthy dose of Tory British gusto thrown in. It’s a relatable purging of the strange times we’ve been living through. It’s absurd laugh-out-loud comedy at its best. And it’s definitely not one to be missed. You simply have to see it.

“Funny, intelligent, satirical” ⭐⭐⭐⭐, Theatre News
“The catharsis we all need” ⭐⭐⭐⭐, London Pub Theatres
“Thanks to Joe, I no longer feel quite so alone” ⭐⭐⭐⭐, A Younger Theatre

    Lord God

by Brian Mitchell and Philip Reeve

    Loop

    by Peter Mulligan

Here’s to breakdowns, burnt bridges and no answers.

Tiny Room Theatre Company presents ‘Loop’ written by Peter Mulligan and directed by Joe Idris-Roberts. This short drama shows a snapshot of life with depression.

The story follows hopeless barman Chris, who is in desperate need to end his shift. Enter presumptuous regular Steve, who convinces Chris it’s only fair to serve him one more round. One drink turns to several and swiftly last orders become a lock in. As the pair become more intoxicated, they unveil wistful dreams and bitter disappointments.

The liquor frees them to speak candidly about each other’s failures, though neither seem willing to listen. The night becomes stranger when bewitched hobo Paul arrives determined to bring Chris enlightenment.

This raw, thought-provoking piece grapples with heavy themes, including an honest exploration of depression and suicide.

    Death and the Maiden

    01/03/2024-20/11/2022

    Death and the Maiden

tríada presents Death and the Maiden by Ariel Dorfman, an immersive theatre production, fresh from its debut in Hove this summer where it received the status of “groundbreaking” work by Fringe reviews.

tríada is a Greco-British theatre company tackling big social issues in small, intimate, diverse spaces. We create immersive performances that provoke thought and incite conversation by dealing with the truths of the human condition. We select and perform for our audiences an array of comic, dramatic and political plays that are timeless and universal, ’discussing’ everyday issues such as relationships, family, society, love and trust. By operating in people’s ‘personal space’, we aim to subvert the notion of temporary suspension of disbelief, instead provoking audiences to believe, react and respond to man’s inhumanity to man.

With a distinctive, diverse use of space, tríada aims to create new experiences for our audiences, in a live, almost cinematic approach, while embracing the fascinating energy of theatre. In this way every performance is different, unique.

“Triada Theatre don’t so much break a fourth wall as pick it up, port it and enter your home with it intact.” Fringe Review 2022.

Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay!’ is a classic political farce by Nobel Prize-winning playwright Dario Fo.

    The Laramie Project

    7:30 pm-10:00 pm
    01/03/2024-30/04/2023

    The Laramie Project

ACT Youth Theatre proudly present The Laramie Project directed by Hasan Dixon.

The Laramie Project is a 2000 play by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theatre Project,  about the reaction to the murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming.  The murder was denounced as a hate crime and brought attention to the lack of hate crime laws in various US states, including Wyoming.

After Matthew’s murder in 1998, members of the Tectonic Theatre Project in New York City travelled to Laramie, Wyoming, to interview residents about how the attack on Matt had affected the town. These transcripts were transformed into the play The Laramie Project, which tells the stories of real people who lived at the epicenter of one of the nation’s most heinous anti-gay hate crimes.

An example of verbatim theatre, the play draws on hundreds of interviews conducted by the theatre company with inhabitants of the town, company members’ own journal entries, and published news reports. It is divided into three acts, and eight actors portray more than sixty characters in a series of short scenes.

    Animal Farm

by George Orwell adapted by Ian Wooldridge

George Orwell’s classic tale of farmyard animals who rise up against their human oppressor, only to fall prey to one of their own, is sadly as relevant today as it was in 1945. It was originally written in response to the Russian Revolution of 1917, which was itself was caused by bad state management of a crisis (WW1) leading to a huge rise in the cost of living and food shortages.

To Britain in 2023, this sounds distressingly familiar.

    The Merchant of Venice

    01/03/2024-18/11/2023

    A Royal Threesome

    A Royal Threesome

    By Sandy Trueman

Based on the true story of the worst-matched royal couple in history: a soap-opera of secret wives; scheming mistresses; spying courtiers and scandal galore. A marriage motivated, not by love, but by the Prince Regent’s colossal debts caused by scything his way through society ladies, as well as maids, cooks, prostitutes, and actresses. So pressing was his financial need, he was prepared to forget he already had a wife when he married his cousin! On his wedding night he was so drunk he slept with his head in the fireplace. However, he had underestimated Caroline’s willingness to fight back, and a royal battle ensued.

    7:45 pm-8:45 pm
    01/03/2024-29/05/2022

    Labyrinth

    by  LLL Productions

    Prison Dialogues

    By Mark C. Hewitt

Prison Dialogues consists of interweaving male and female dialogues set in the everyday of prison. Two men, three women and a text full of banter that leans playfully towards the futile. The Sweet Science of Bruising

    by Joy Wilkinson

“When that bell rings, your life is entirely in your hands.”

London, 1869. Four very different Victorian women are drawn into the dark underground world of female boxing by the eccentric Professor Sharp. Controlled by men and constrained by corsets, each finds an unexpected freedom in the boxing ring. As their lives begin to intertwine their journey takes us through grand drawing rooms, bustling theatres and rowdy Southwark pubs where the women fight inequality as well as each other. But with the final showdown approaching only one can become the Lady Boxing Champion of the World…

Based on historical research into 19th century women’s boxing, The Sweet Science of Bruising is a fascinating new play by Joy Wilkinson (Verity Bargate Award winner and new series writer for Doctor Who). Featuring an ensemble cast, this is an epic tale of passion, politics and pugilism.

    Directed by Graeme Dalling.

The Ruffian On The Stair & Funeral Games

    8:00 pm-10:20 pm
    01/03/2024-12/08/2023

ACT Diploma present the extraordinary debut play from the Royal Court by two brothers from Siberia. A series of seemingly unrelated scenes portray the ordinary frustrations of everyday life: office workers bickering, a couple committing adultery, grannies complaining about their husbands. But the scenes unfold to reveal the mistrust and dysfunction that have become the norm, in Russia and elsewhere.Terrorism by the Presnyakov Brothers was first performed, in this English translation by Sasha Dugdale, at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 2003.

‘A bitter, funny, penetrating look at the toxic effects of living with fear… Terrorism shrugs off more ideas in quarter of an hour’s wit than most political debating plays do in an evening’. Observer.

“Frayn’s translation, which strikes me as splendidly lucid and alive…will be acted again and again” (New Statesman).

In Chekhov’s tragi-comedy – perhaps his most popular play – the Gayev family is torn by powerful forces deeply rooted in history and the society in which they live. Their estate is hopelessly in debt and when urged to cut down their beautiful cherry orchard and sell the land for holiday cottages, they are confronted by an impossible decision. “At the time when The Cherry Orchard was written, the years before the revolution of 1905, Chekhov considered revolution in Russia irreversible and desirable.”

The Pitchfork Disney by Philip Ridley

    8:00 pm-10:00 pm
    01/03/2024-26/11/2023

The Pitchfork Disney by Philip Ridley

Brighton’s Poisoned Chalice Productions, is warning theatregoers that their first offering  is neither half hearted nor for the faint hearted. This new theatre company knows it is taking a serious plunge by presenting Philip Ridley’s 1991 masterpiece Pitchfork Disney, the play that smashed the theatrical conventions of the time and set the agenda for contemporary British experimental theatre.
Described by 90s critics as ‘in-yer-face and proud’, Pitchfork Disney’s menacing claustrophobia and Goth sensibility are the stuff of legend. Its viscerally dangerous mix of fantasy, violence, sex panic, sci-fi, illness, isolation and perversion sees characters propelled through the dazzling imagery of fear in a wasteland of a world. Disrupted, isolated, monstrous and inept, but redeemed by a sense of humour  their poetic soliloquies are like a vibrating tuning fork ringing out the tensions between the grotesque and the routine, between voyeurism and distaste.
Because the play is ultimately a deeper journey into obsessions and fear than most horror movies this production is timely. By re-animating the universal bogeyman Pitchfork Disney uncannily anticipates the fact that fear, real and invented, is an even more powerful currency than it was last century.
The crew of Poisoned Chalice, who are all seasoned Brighton actors, are probably right to tell casual amusement seekers to stay away lest they vomit into their mouths.

The story of Father Damien de Veuster, the leper priest of Molokai and patron saint of outcasts.

In this passionate, one man show, actor Daniel Finlay channels the powerful stories of the challenges that Damien experienced while serving the community of exiled lepers on a remote Hawaiian island in the 1870’s and 80’s, until his own life was taken by the affliction on April 15, 1889.

He was born Joseph and received the name Damien in religious life. In 1864, he was sent to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he was ordained. For the next nine years he worked in missions on the big island, Hawaii. In 1873, he went to the leper colony on Molokai, after volunteering for the assignment. Damien cared for lepers of all ages, but was particularly concerned about the children segregated in the colony. He announced he was a leper in 1885 and continued to build hospitals, clinics, and churches, and some six hundred coffins. He died on April 15, on Molokai…. Pope John Paul II declared him beatified on June 4, 1995. Father Damien was canonised in a ceremony at the Vatican on October 11, 2009.

“In our own time as millions around the world suffer from disease, especially the pandemic of HIV/AIDS, we should draw on the example of Fr. Damien’s resolve in answering the urgent call to heal and care for the sick.”

    Handbag

    by Mark Ravenhill

Twenty-eight years before The Importance of Being Earnest, a young woman gives birth to a baby boy. Is it an accident when Nanny places him in a handbag and her unpublished novel into the pram? In 1998 a new baby is stolen and an academic discovers an unpublished novel of more than usual revolting sentimentality. From Victorian wet nurses to 90s sperm banks, Mark Ravenhill’s play examines the role of parenting in an age of diverse sexualities, biological engineering and Tinky Winky’s handbag.

Trigger Warning – contains explicit sexual references and scenes of a distressing nature. Suitable for 16+

“In Shopping and Fucking, Mark Ravenhill made theatre relevant to the Thatcher generation. Now he’s put videos and Net-surfing in Faust. And it’s no less stunning” (Guardian)

“There are few stage authors writing more interestingly than Mark Ravenhill. He is – it is now yet more evident – a searing, intelligent, disturbing sociologist with a talent for satirical dialogue and a flair for sexual sensationalism” (Financial Times)

Mark Ravenhill is one of the most distinctive contemporary UK playwrights. He burst on to the theatre scene in 1996 with the huge hit Shopping and Fucking. He has continued to garner critical acclaim for plays that include Some Explicit Polaroids, Mother Clap’s Molly House, Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat, Ten Plagues (A Song Cycle), The Cane and The Boy in the Dress.

    The Accrington Pals

    by Peter Whelan
    Directed by Mark Carroll

‘The Accrington Pals’ follows the story of the innocent and enthusiastic men who voluntarily enlisted at the beginning of the First World War, in response to General Kitchener’s calls for a New Army. Peter Whelan’s beautiful and heartfelt play contrasts the Pals’ lives on the Western Front with those of the women left behind in Accrington. The women come together as friends as they face financial, social and sexual deprivation, as well as being thrown headlong into the social changes that come along with the absence of so many men. The play has many fun, light-hearted moments, which are starkly contrasted with the terrifying reality hundreds of men faced at the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

While the story itself is fiction, the background is reality. The Pals were formed and fought just as they are described as doing in the play.

Whelan’s inspiration for The Accrington Pals, he wrote, stemmed from his fascination with a “fuzzy snapshot of his mother taken in the First World War.”

The play has been likened to the “documentary plays” of the 1960s and renowned theatre critic, Michael Billington noted its “combination of theatricality and truth” stating it is “one of the best plays ever about the first world war.”

Hayley needs to find a boyfriend quick! She only has seconds to decide before it’s too late. However, this is not real life, it’s more important than that, this is a game – with strict rules.

Find A Partner! is a play that takes us on a journey through the closing rounds of a gameshow about coupledom. Meet the contestants, revere them, live through them, reject them. A show, played by a few watched by many, but everyone’s involved. Who’s in, who’s out, who likes who, who’s with who, who gets a say and who gets to choose?

Everything’s at stake, because, well, EVERYTHING IS AT STAKE. That’s life, everybody wants a partner, don’t they? No partner?….impossible to imagine…isn’t it? Impossible to live like that. Isn’t it?

    Ghost Stories for Christmas 2021

Have yourself a scary little Christmas…. Brighton’s original Ghost Stories for Christmas returns to The Lantern Theatre, featuring a trio of spine tingling tales from masters of horror Ramsey Campbell and John Paul Fitch and, for the first time, award winning novelist Kate Mosse.

Following a break in 2020 due to ill health, director and producer Craig Johnson says ‘We are delighted to be back at The Lantern this year performing our annual show, which has been a staple of the Brighton Christmas Season since our first production 9 years ago. After a serious health scare in 2020 we are proud to be donating our proceeds from the show to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, without which I may have ended up quite literally in a ghost story. I am eternally grateful for the care I received from all of the staff there and so it feels fantastic to be giving something back, particularly following all of the efforts made by the NHS over the past two years.”

This year’s show promises tales of horror, melancholy and dark humour and features a ghostly bride, malevolent decorations and a rather unusual Christmas miracle. Please note that this production, which contains strong language, is not suitable for children.

Because our audience capacity is now reduced, and we want to raise as much money as possible for the NHS, we will not be including mulled wine within this year’s ticket.

ACT Youth Theatre - When This Is Over

    ACT Youth Theatre Present

    The Ruffian on the Stair

The Ruffian on the Stair is the first play Joe Orton ever wrote. Rarely performed, this production set in a sordid bedsit has been described as ‘dripping with menace’ and ‘compelling’.

It is an unsympathetic yet comedic one-act portrayal of working class England, as played out by a couple and a mysterious young man who toys with their lives. It was based on The Boy Hairdresser, a novel by Orton and his lover Kenneth Halliwell.

    God on High

Tulip, a young, free spirited vicar, whose debt-ridden church is on the brink of closure, needs a miracle.

Living in a parish with a rising drug problem, trying to revive her failing love life, dealing with her bankrupt church, her oversexed nan, plus horny parishioners, she now has to acknowledge her grief after the recent, unexpected, death of her mother. With wavering faith, and bombarded with what appear to be signs from God, Tulip needs help. When an unexpected inheritance from her mother is announced, she finds herself asking is God testing her faith or has He found the perfect way to solve all her problems?

God on High is a loosely autobiographical play by Rhoda Dell. Four years ago Rhoda heard a spiritual voice announcing that her mother, who was in good health, was going to die and how. And then she did… on Good Friday!

Since then life has continued to demonstrate to Rhoda that she may not be the sole author of her story. Following this realisation, she has found life a lot more interesting- when you let go of how you think life should look, to endless possibilities appear.

Rhoda holds a Masters in Theology from The University of St Andrews, and trained at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in Acting and Singing.
