    Paler, Still

by Oonagh Wall in collaboration with the company.

    Nothing grows in Dublin anymore.
Concrete, glass and grey. The landscape is the same everywhere,
Beyond the Pale, in the rural Irish boglands, an abandoned Hotel rots.
This would be a safe place to stagnate.
    Or so it seems.
Set in a near-future Ireland were the Western World has eaten itself into anonymity and another recession: Paler, Still is a new tragi-comedy and is anseo|anois theatre’s debut production.
Paler, Still tells a story set in Ireland, but it is not just a story for the Irish. This small country is a microcosm for something we see happening all over the Western World. The poverty gap widens, some opportunities only available to a select few, society circling back on itself again and again and our play asks, what is the cost of progress? What is lost as we charge into the future? Are some people always left behind? And, if we despair at society, can we simply opt out?

    Macbeth

    Directed by Beth Wood

A powerful and haunting adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

When Macbeth kills Duncan and all that is best in himself, the world turns upside down.

Beautiful poetry hits against heightened horror in this ensemble-focused retelling, drawing us into a world of festering ambition and hunger for power that seems frighteningly like our own.

    Lord God

    7:00 pm-9:30 pm

    Lord God

by Brian Mitchell and Philip Reeve

From the writers of ‘The Ministry of Biscuits’ and ‘Pugs of the Frozen North’ stage show – author Philip Reeve (Mortal Engines)
and playwright and composer Brian Mitchell (‘Those Magnificent Men’) – comes the divine new musical comedy Lord God

When the Lord God is persuaded by His retainer and chief-cook-and-bottle-washer Gabriel to take an incognito holiday in a Devonshire seaside hotel (largely to get Him out from under His angels’ feet), He looks forward to a fortnight of uninterrupted tennis, billiards, tea on the terrace and the latest Agatha Christie. But the presence of campaigning atheist Professor ‘Minty’ Tweddle and her fiance, notoriously hard-to-please theatre critic Rex Addison, upsets His plans and leads to all manner of supernatural scrapes, japes and narrow escapes and the invention of a hot new global dance craze.

Can our hero persuade Minty He really exists?
Can He solve the Problem of Evil before breakfast?
What exactly is Rex Addison up to?
Will Gabriel step in once more to save the Almighty’s bacon?

Find out the answers to these questions and all the mysteries of Creation in the new musical comedy Lord God, from best-selling author Philip Reeve and award-winning playwright and composer Brian Mitchell, whose previous collaborations include the recent sell-out stage adaptation of Pugs of the Frozen North and the acclaimed musical comedy The Ministry of Biscuits.  Building on their reputation for thought-provoking comedy, Lord God takes a timely look at morality, faith, and why sometimes it is best not to take things too seriously.

Produced by the “renowned and very popular” (London Pub Theatres) company The Foundry Group, and with a top-notch cast including Joanna Neary (Ideal), and Murray Simon (The Ministry of Biscuits), Lord God promises a night of  witty lyrics, toe-tapping tunes and thoughtful frivolity.

“The latest vintage-inspired slice of Englishness from the engagingly skewed Foundry Group….  Clever Gilbert & Sullivanesque lyrics and sparky lines… Sweet, gentle, full of heart….a huge hit with the crowd.”

An Introduction to Playwriting : Staged Readings

Two new playwrights, Daniel Allen and Jason Lever, present new writing developed on ACT’s Introduction to Playwriting course.

This is a rehearsed reading with professional actors bringing these new scripts to the stage for the first time.

An eclectic evening including two direct address monologues featuring a disenchanted theatre usher and Michelangelo’s elderly assistant, Domenico. There are also two play extracts which transport us to two very different worlds – that of Indian soldiers recuperating at the Royal Pavilion during the First World War and of Lola Montez, an Irish dancer and actress who became famous as a Spanish dancer, courtesan, and mistress of King Ludwig I of Bavaria.

    Loop

    by Peter Mulligan

Here’s to breakdowns, burnt bridges and no answers.

Tiny Room Theatre Company presents ‘Loop’ written by Peter Mulligan and directed by Joe Idris-Roberts. This short drama shows a snapshot of life with depression.

The story follows hopeless barman Chris, who is in desperate need to end his shift. Enter presumptuous regular Steve, who convinces Chris it’s only fair to serve him one more round. One drink turns to several and swiftly last orders become a lock in. As the pair become more intoxicated, they unveil wistful dreams and bitter disappointments.

The liquor frees them to speak candidly about each other’s failures, though neither seem willing to listen. The night becomes stranger when bewitched hobo Paul arrives determined to bring Chris enlightenment.

This raw, thought-provoking piece grapples with heavy themes, including an honest exploration of depression and suicide.

    Talking Heads –
A Lady of Letters & A Bed Among the Lentils

    by Alan Bennett

Bedlamb theatre brings you two classic monologues of 20th century British writing with a production of Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads. Bennett uses a rich canvas of recognisable references and everyday life to paint a picture of two seemingly trapped women who find freedom in unconventional ways. The master of capturing our daily rituals, undermined with biting wit, these stories show how the pain of isolation can separate us from achieving our dreams and desires.

    Rock Bottom

    27/02/2022-16/06/2021

    Rock Bottom

    By Fresh Life Theatre

Shakespeare’s best loved clown, Bottom, is reimagined in Fresh Life Theatre’s new one-man show.

Bottom has spent his life pushing the people closest to him away, so it makes sense for him to perform a socially-distanced show. Combining the masterful wit and language of the Bard with fast-paced, sensitive new-writing, Charlie Day has created a production which has something for everyone. Bottom has been left to put a play on all by himself. Watch as he battles his demons, all in an effort to…make you like him.

Mental health is a very prominent issue in the world today, especially with everything people are going through. The show looks to open a discussion about mental health, especially men’s mental health, and hopefully make some men less reluctant to speak up.

So please, give Bottom the attention he needs!

Coronavirus – A Great British Farce

    7:30 pm-10:00 pm
    27/02/2022

Joe went a little bit mad during lockdown – just like you did – and it’s hilariously cathartic to watch. This smash-hit Camden Fringe show is inspired by the writer’s ridiculous lockdown diaries – and it’s the best way to laugh away the trauma of the past 18 months. Joe’s stuck in a tiny flat trying to make sense of the pandemic. One day, whilst watching a government briefing on TV, he decides to answer back. This sets off a surreal conversation with… Boris? Or maybe it’s his friend on Facebook? Or… maybe it’s his fridge. All Joe knows is, he definitely doesn’t know.

Brought to you by writer-director team Mark Daniels and Edwina Strobl, this Offie-nominated dark satirical comedy offers a unique take on the British response to the pandemic. The play’s two actors (rising stars Kathryn Haywood and Edward Bartram) take you on a high-energy farcical journey from panic buying to Jackie Weaver via Matt Hancock, with an unhealthy dose of Tory British gusto thrown in. It’s a relatable purging of the strange times we’ve been living through. It’s absurd laugh-out-loud comedy at its best. And it’s definitely not one to be missed. You simply have to see it.

“Funny, intelligent, satirical” ⭐⭐⭐⭐, Theatre News
“The catharsis we all need” ⭐⭐⭐⭐, London Pub Theatres
“Thanks to Joe, I no longer feel quite so alone” ⭐⭐⭐⭐, A Younger Theatre

Brought to you in partnership with mental health charity, Campaign to End Loneliness.

    27/02/2022

    Ghost Stories for Christmas 2021

Have yourself a scary little Christmas…. Brighton’s original Ghost Stories for Christmas returns to The Lantern Theatre, featuring a trio of spine tingling tales from masters of horror Ramsey Campbell and John Paul Fitch and, for the first time, award winning novelist Kate Mosse.

Following a break in 2020 due to ill health, director and producer Craig Johnson says ‘We are delighted to be back at The Lantern this year performing our annual show, which has been a staple of the Brighton Christmas Season since our first production 9 years ago. After a serious health scare in 2020 we are proud to be donating our proceeds from the show to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, without which I may have ended up quite literally in a ghost story. I am eternally grateful for the care I received from all of the staff there and so it feels fantastic to be giving something back, particularly following all of the efforts made by the NHS over the past two years.”

This year’s show promises tales of horror, melancholy and dark humour and features a ghostly bride, malevolent decorations and a rather unusual Christmas miracle. Please note that this production, which contains strong language, is not suitable for children.

Because our audience capacity is now reduced, and we want to raise as much money as possible for the NHS, we will not be including mulled wine within this year’s ticket.

    The Cherry Orchard

by Anton Chekhov translation by Michael Frayn

“Frayn’s translation, which strikes me as splendidly lucid and alive…will be acted again and again” (New Statesman).

In Chekhov’s tragi-comedy – perhaps his most popular play – the Gayev family is torn by powerful forces deeply rooted in history and the society in which they live. Their estate is hopelessly in debt and when urged to cut down their beautiful cherry orchard and sell the land for holiday cottages, they are confronted by an impossible decision. “At the time when The Cherry Orchard was written, the years before the revolution of 1905, Chekhov considered revolution in Russia irreversible and desirable.”

A stark, fast-paced and fraught play about political upheaval and the media’s relationship with civil violence and terrorism in modern Britain.

A peaceful politician is slain on the streets of Vida’s hometown. Reeling from the tragedy, Vida embarks on an increasingly dangerous mission to confront the rise in bigotry and fascism.

But just as she feels most alone, she discovers there are others who feel the same as her – and now the deadly potential of their combined power is about to be unleashed.

Content guidance: This play contains very strong language, references to drug use, sexual activity and violence, onstage portrayals of violence, and explorations of adult themes including racism.

    Directed by Mark Carroll.

    The Sweet Science of Bruising

    by Joy Wilkinson

“When that bell rings, your life is entirely in your hands.”

London, 1869. Four very different Victorian women are drawn into the dark underground world of female boxing by the eccentric Professor Sharp. Controlled by men and constrained by corsets, each finds an unexpected freedom in the boxing ring. As their lives begin to intertwine their journey takes us through grand drawing rooms, bustling theatres and rowdy Southwark pubs where the women fight inequality as well as each other. But with the final showdown approaching only one can become the Lady Boxing Champion of the World…

Based on historical research into 19th century women’s boxing, The Sweet Science of Bruising is a fascinating new play by Joy Wilkinson (Verity Bargate Award winner and new series writer for Doctor Who). Featuring an ensemble cast, this is an epic tale of passion, politics and pugilism.

    Directed by Graeme Dalling.

    Find a Partner!

    by Miriam Battye

Hayley needs to find a boyfriend quick! She only has seconds to decide before it’s too late. However, this is not real life, it’s more important than that, this is a game – with strict rules.

Find A Partner! is a play that takes us on a journey through the closing rounds of a gameshow about coupledom. Meet the contestants, revere them, live through them, reject them. A show, played by a few watched by many, but everyone’s involved. Who’s in, who’s out, who likes who, who’s with who, who gets a say and who gets to choose?

Everything’s at stake, because, well, EVERYTHING IS AT STAKE. That’s life, everybody wants a partner, don’t they? No partner?….impossible to imagine…isn’t it? Impossible to live like that. Isn’t it?

The Unconscious Theatre Collective proudly presents (Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award Winner) Edward Albee’s seminal piece ‘Zoo Story’.

Two very different men meet by chance in Central Park on a sunny Sunday afternoon. A play about isolation, social disparity, hope and connection, and the inhumanity of modern life. Witty, strange, but ultimately poignant and grounded, the friendly chat they begin will have profound effects on the direction of both their lives.
